Rubin and the groovy tuesdays gig

I recently went to 'Rubin and the groovy tuesdays' gig in Manor house at a pub called 'The Finsbury' where many other famous artists would play such as Ed Sheeran. I went as I wanted to talk to the band about any ideas for the music video.

Goodwin's theory

Hype Williams and his signature style

Hype Williams was born in Queens New York in 1970 and since then has created a well known name in the music industry as a music director mainly focusing on R&B and Hip Hop music style videos. Hype Williams has worked with a large variety of well known successful artists such as 2pac, Jay Z, Kanye West, Beyoncé and many more.

Hype Williams is considered as an innovator as he put across many of his own ideas through the music videos he directs. Just like any other director Hype Williams has his own signature style.

One of the signature styles are when Hype puts a variety of shots of the music video in a banner of a widescreen ration whilst at the same time another shot is split across the screen. An example of this is in BeyoncĂ©’s song ‘Check on it’.

Another signature style of Hype Williams is the fish eye lens which distorts around the central camera focus. An example of this is in Will Smith’s hit song ‘Getting jiggy with it’.

Another typical signature style Hype Williams uses is the use of bold eye catching colours in music videos, which not only help catch the viewer’s eye but also does not make the video dull. An example of this is in Kanye West and Jamie Fox’s video ‘Gold digga’.

Auteur theory

What is the Auteur theory?

The Auteur theory is originally from France in the 1950's from a range of French film directors such as Francois Truffaut who promoted ‘focus on the contribution directors made on the style and form of film’.

When the term Auteur when translated into English translates as Author, which means the director of any film is like the author and there film piece will reflect their vision.

Nowdays an Auteur can be seen as a director of a music video, an example of this is Chris Cunningham who is well known for his work having a mysterious style and being unique, such as with when he directed Madonna’s hit song ‘Frozen’.

Different types of music videos

Performance – Is when the artist or group typically does a dance routine with the song. An example of this is in The WANTED's music video for their hit song 'walks like Rihanna', where they are all dressed in a number of matching outfits and do a synced dance routine.

Narrative – A Narrative music video is when the video has a narrative story line like a mini story to go along with the film. An example of this Eminem's song love the way you lie, where a couple are shown  arguing and playing out the lyrics.

Conceptual – Conceptual music videos tend to not have anything to do with the actual song and lyrics
and are a lot more diverse and different. An example of this is Monkey Drummer by the Aphex Twin, where the entire music video is based on an animated monkey playing the drums.
