Hype Williams and his signature style

Hype Williams was born in Queens New York in 1970 and since then has created a well known name in the music industry as a music director mainly focusing on R&B and Hip Hop music style videos. Hype Williams has worked with a large variety of well known successful artists such as 2pac, Jay Z, Kanye West, Beyoncé and many more.

Hype Williams is considered as an innovator as he put across many of his own ideas through the music videos he directs. Just like any other director Hype Williams has his own signature style.

One of the signature styles are when Hype puts a variety of shots of the music video in a banner of a widescreen ration whilst at the same time another shot is split across the screen. An example of this is in BeyoncĂ©’s song ‘Check on it’.

Another signature style of Hype Williams is the fish eye lens which distorts around the central camera focus. An example of this is in Will Smith’s hit song ‘Getting jiggy with it’.

Another typical signature style Hype Williams uses is the use of bold eye catching colours in music videos, which not only help catch the viewer’s eye but also does not make the video dull. An example of this is in Kanye West and Jamie Fox’s video ‘Gold digga’.
